Continuing to build on the soul-searching narrative of the upcoming album “SPIRAL,” Nigeria’s Tim Lyre (@timlyre) releases a wistful new single “Storytime,” featuring UK indie-soul artist BINA. (@binaofficial). The track arrives via Johannesburg and London-based label Outer South.

On “Storytime,” Tim Lyre and BINA. relay a tale of fractured romance; the happily-ever-after fantasy succumbing to a starker reality. The track’s warped melodies conjure a sense of nostalgia as the couple details the moments when their relationship fell short. The back and forth between BINA. and Tim’s gently sung vocals create an intimate portrayal of two spurned lovers, cradled by the track’s delicate neo-soul beat.
The accompanying music video, directed by Chris Saunders, portrays Tim and BINA. bathed in neon light, sat inside a classic car, and performed the song to one another. The video highlights the conversational nature of the track and gives a candid insight into the breakdown of a relationship. As the video comes to an end, we see Tim looking back at the now-empty car, conveying a sense of loss and regret.
“I’ll keep the dreams that you sold me.”

“Storytime” follows on from recent releases “Rocketship” and “BETTER4U,” all of which will feature on Tim Lyre’s upcoming album “SPIRAL.” Across the LP, Tim embarks on an odyssey of self-discovery, casting a spotlight on many aspects of his life and innermost thoughts. In tandem with its subject matter, sonically the album is an exploration of various moods and genres, spanning Afrobeats, high life, jazz, boom bap, and R&B, all under the umbrella of Tim’s unique brand of Afro-fusion. Split into an A side and B side which simultaneously separate and blend the darker and lighter aspects of life, themes of loneliness, love, loss, and resilience are examined, creating a project that is both theatrical yet deeply personal.
As the themes behind “SPIRAL” begin to unravel, “Storytime” showcases Tim Lyre’s ability to create thoughtful, emotive pieces of art, never shying away from the more difficult aspects of the human experience.
