The Loving Paupers (@thelovingpaupers) is a lovers rock/reggae band based in Washington, D.C. Not too long ago, they released an animated lyric video for their brand-new reggae single, titled, “Mary,” via Easy Star Records.
The Loving Paupers – “Mary” lyric video
‘Mary’ is a brooding, rootsy composition heavily influenced by the early ’80s Jamaican masters. Lyrically, our singer Kelly takes you on a desperate journey through her town aiming to score some weed, a la The Velvet Underground’s Waiting for the Man.” – The Loving Paupers explained
Lead vocalist Kelly Di Filippo provides evocative lyrics and an enchanting voice that sounds nothing like any of her contemporaries in the modern reggae scene, helping to make The Loving Paupers sound so unique.
‘Mary’ contains a relatable narrative, moody melodies, and ear-pleasing vocals that will resonate well with fans of Sister Nancy & Fireproof, The Zombies, and Hollie Cook. The melodic tune possesses saturated drums, funky guitars, and rhythmic bass-laden instrumentation flavored with indie sounds, dreamy lovers’ rock elements, and a brokenhearted roots reggae vibration. Furthermore, “Mary” is featured on The Loving Paupers’ upcoming album, entitled, LADDERS.

The project was mixed by Latin GRAMMY award-winning producer (and Easy Star Records labelmate) Victor Rice, who has a long-standing relationship with The Loving Paupers dating back to their first record.
Formed in 2015, The Loving Paupers is a collective brought together through a mutual love of the Jamaican musical masters, with a particular affinity for the late ‘70s/early ‘80s reggae era. Adding to that, this reggae/dub outfit has formed under an ever-present influence of Lennon-McCartney songwriting, along with other non-Jamaican groups like The Kinks, The Zombies, and The Supremes.

The result is a one-of-a-kind alchemy of hypnotic Jamaican rhythms meeting British Invasion melodies. The Loving Paupers recorded their self-titled debut EP in 2016, which introduced listeners to their melancholy sound. They then followed up with the full-length LINES (and its companion album LINES IN DUB) in 2019. In 2020, they released the EP VALUABLES.
