Swim Fan is a band that originated in Oklahoma City around 2016. “I thought I needed you in my life. But now I see it, I’m doing alright. No longer feel it, I held it too tight. Don’t say ya miss it, we both know I’m right. I can’t tell you why I needed you to know. There’s no reason why I shouldn’t let you go, but I thought I needed it.” – lyrics
‘Doin’ Alright’ tells a heartfelt tale about a guy who is going through withdrawals from a failed relationship. Apparently, he’s trying his best to forget his ex-partner but the image of this person never disappears from his mind. As he moves on with his life, he reveals, “There’s no turning back, ya said whatcha meant to. I can’t hide the fact, thought I needed you, but it wasn’t true.”
‘Doin’ Alright’ contains a post-relationship-based narrative and ear-pleasing vocals that will resonate well with fans of Pheonix, Toro y Moi, Jungle, MGMT, and Neon Indian. The moody tune possesses saturated drum-laden instrumentation flavored with indie-alternative and dream pop elements. Furthermore, “Doin’ Alright” serves as a taste of what listeners can expect to hear on Swim Fan’s upcoming EP, “Do U Mind?” The project is a collage of emotions surrounding a relationship destined for failure.
“I tried to forget you but you never go away.”
“‘Doin’ Alright’ feels like floating through a montage of moments from a past relationship from a 3rd person’s perspective. Some sweet and sentimental moments, others problematic in hindsight. The sounds, melodies, and harmonies feel like the space between the time of a heartbreak, and the present day having healed from it. The lyrics feel like the knowledge that you’ll never quite be the same, but probably in a good way.” – Swim Fan explained
Swim Fan consists of Spenser Powers (guitar/vocals), Justin McCullough (bass), and Tremaine Wade (drums/percussion). Together, they have been known to weave dreams of pop and waves of synth, perfect psych-tinged sounds for a punch bowl rooftop party or a pool lounge floatie veg session. Their influences include velvet curtains, old VHS tapes, and the one who got away.
