Sannia (@sanniamusic) is a singer-songwriter from Melbourne, Australia. Not too long ago, she released a heartbreaking new alternative pop single, titled, “trigger.”
Sannia – “trigger” single
“Baby put a bullet in my back, said he loved me right back. Put his hands through my hair and pulled the trigger. I’ve been having nightmares, wondering how I got here. Running but I’m going nowhere. Spend my days drowning on dry land, spend my nights slipping through quicksand. So hard to leave when we never really started. Guns drawn, standing at the crossroads, we went from lovers to love and war. If you never meant to hurt me then you never should’ve said sure.” – lyrics
‘trigger’ tells a heartfelt tale about a young woman who realizes that she needs to move on from a relationship that isn’t working. She thought she found a home; thought she found someone who she would spend the rest of her life with. But she was wrong. With a heavy heart, she tells her partner, “Don’t you know that I built it all for you? And if you never meant to hurt me, tell me was it worth it, taking me along for the ride? Don’t know what we had but I know it’s gone now.”
‘trigger’ contains a problematic breakup narrative and ear-pleasing vocals that will resonate well with supporters of King Princess, Maggie Rogers, and CXLOE. The emotive tune possesses thudding drums and guitar-laden instrumentation flavored with contemporary rock and alternative pop elements. Furthermore, “trigger” is a tasty appetizer to what listeners can expect to hear on Sannia’s highly anticipated debut album, available in October 2023.
“No, I don’t want anyone else.”
“I wrote ‘trigger’ after quite a sudden breakup. I thought I was in a safe place finally and let my guard down and the floor came out from under me. You’ll hear samples of gun loading, safety switching, the trigger, because I wanted it to feel as cold and mechanical as a weapon would. I wanted to get the feeling of ‘suddenness’ and shock the way that a gunshot cuts through sound because that’s what this felt like. The returning cycle of the chorus is a manifestation of the fact I couldn’t let go, I kept coming back to that impact (trigger), trying to put the pieces back together.” – Sannia explained
Sannia debuted in 2018 with “Go And Get Over.” Her unique voice was quickly recognized, winning the nationwide Triple J Unearthed Competition to open for and sing with The Rubens on their Lo La Ru Tour. Sannia also supported the likes of Merci Mercy, Mia Wray, Tia Gostelow, Eliott, and Kira Puru. Later, she became a finalist in Nashville’s 2020 International Songwriting Competition out of 26,000 entries.
