Exploring the Sad Emotions in Madisyn Gifford’s “Fast One” Single

Madisyn Gifford (@madisyngifford) is a rising singer-songwriter from Vancouver, BC, Canada. Not too long ago, she released a sad indie-folk single, “Fast One.”

About the track, Madisyn explained: “I wrote the song ‘Fast One’ about 2 years ago after getting ghosted by a guy I liked. Relatable I know. The song is essentially about all of the feelings of sadness, shame, and betrayal that can often come from situations like that but also the humor that can come out of them as well. It’s funny how oftentimes it’s the 2-month situationship that hurts more than the long-term breakup, and this song is me pointing that out. Sonically, we also wanted to highlight those contrasting emotions in the production. I think in the song you can sense the hurt, but it also feels a bit tongue in cheek which is exactly what we wanted!”

“Fast One” is the second revealed single from Madisyn Gifford’s upcoming collection of new music. Following “Seventeen” – a track that leaned into her folk roots, while still maintaining her infectious brand of confessional pop – “Fast One” displays the true talent she possesses both vocally and as a songwriter as the docile track merges raw emotion with lighthearted humor.

Madisyn Gifford – “Seventeen” single

“‘Seventeen’ is a song about that middle school feeling we all get when we’re first falling for someone, wanting to walk up to your crush, poke them, and then run away. Through writing it, I was essentially exploring the fear, excitement, and also embarrassment of having a crush on someone now as an adult instead of as a teenager, feeling like I’m seventeen again.” – Madisyn Gifford explained

“Seventeen” showcases a fresh, folk-tinged pop sound that diverges from Madisyn’s previous work. Yet, it remains grounded in her introspective songwriting abilities. The track’s lyrical content delves into the whimsical and often embarrassing emotions associated with having a crush, akin to being a teenager again. To date, “Seventeen” has garnered over 65K streams and was added to various editorial playlists including Fresh Finds, Fresh Finds Country, Fresh Folk & Acoustic, Brand New Music, and New Music Daily.
