Joeboy (@joeboyofficial) is an Afrobeats superstar from Lagos, Nigeria. Not too long ago, he embarked on an exciting new era with the release of his highly anticipated single, “Osadebe.” The release is the first on Joeboy’s new label, Young Legend, in partnership with Warner Music Africa.
Directed by filmmaker Jyde Ajala, known for his work with the biggest names in Afrobeats including Omah Lay, Fireboy DML and Asake, the captivating video combines vibrant visuals and mesmerizing choreography as it captures the essence of the track’s primary message, which pays homage to the late Chief Osita Osadebe’s iconic care-free hit “Osondi Owendi.” Shot in his hometown, the video sees Joeboy pull up to a museum-like building with a superhero’s demeanor, with the presence of a mysterious yet enigmatic female presence looking to lure him inside as she’s backed by an army of dancers who surround him upon entry.
Joeboy – “Osadebe” visualizer
Exploring themes of self-reflection and positive affirmations, “Osadebe” is a cultural anthem that dominated the music scene in the southeast and south-south regions of Nigeria in the early 2000s. Through his lyrics: “I no dey cross my lane, I’m living like Osadebe, Osondi Owendi,” Joeboy asserts his individuality, expressing a determination to chart his course in the music industry without succumbing to unnecessary comparisons and pressures.
Encapsulating the artistic sensibilities of his sound, the K-Dreamz produced “Osadebe” is a testament to Joeboy’s versatility and evolution as an artist, offering a glimpse into the musical journey he is embarking on. The single sets the stage for a series of releases culminating in a much-anticipated EP towards the end of the year.
“Sometimes I feel like I’m supernatural.”
With over two billion streams to his name, the release follows last year’s “Body & Soul” EP, an introspective offering and the last as part of his label deal on Mr Eazi’s emPawa Africa label, with a run of singles and a European tour on the horizon in the months ahead.
The launch of Young Legend, created in partnership with Warner Music Africa, is dedicated to nurturing and promoting the next generation of musical pioneers. With a keen focus on unorthodox and boundary-pushing approaches to music, Young Legend aims to inspire and elevate artists who dare to defy conventions and create innovative sounds that will shape the future of the industry.
“I’m only human.”
Joeboy recently performed to a sold-out crowd at the University of Lagos, where he mesmerized the audience with a preview of “Osadebe.” The event generated an online buzz and heightened anticipation for the release, which comes off the back of a recent collaboration with French-Congolese artist Hiro and DJ Neptune on the Detty December anthem “Na nko.”
