Itse is a Dublin-based singer-songwriter from Nigeria. Not too long ago, she released a wonderful afrobeats single, entitled, “Big Star.” The song is Itse’s first release after six years of being underground and working as a songwriter for artists mostly in Africa.
Itse – “Big Star” single
“You do like say you no know me, but when I come into the city, everybody wanna follow me. I know you know, don’t be acting shallow. And every time I come you go bend low. Come close, give me some more. It’s a run down when I touchdown. Buss down now dey come now. Na Big Star me I want to be.” – lyrics
‘Big Star’ tells an intriguing tale about a young woman who gets a lot of attention wherever she goes. Apparently, the only conversation she entertains are convos about money because she’s all about her paper and generating income. Later, she admits, “Whenever mi burst mi keep it on lowkey. Me on fire, I say mi gat the blaze on me. I no wan hear story, only Jah me give the glory.”
‘Big Star’ contains a relatable narrative, ear-pleasing vocals, and catchy melodies that will resonate well with fans of Burna Boy, WizKid, and Davido. The likable tune possesses groovy bass and rhythmic drum-laden instrumentation flavored with afrobeats and dancehall elements. Furthermore, the lyrics are reflective and honest—bearing questions about Itse’s future and if her dreams will become a reality.
“I really don’t care if I be lonely.”
Jagajaga is a phrase mentioned several times in “Big Star.” The word reflects how Itse intends to take her place in the industry. In her own words, “If they don’t create space for me. I would rugged my way and make space for myself.” The twenty-something-year-old artist has already begun to impact audiences of all ages with her classic afrobeat reggae flow.
Itse was not exposed to a wide variety of talented people growing up in Nigeria. A self-taught musician, she learned all she knows simply by watching YouTube videos about songwriting. She graduated with a degree in Economics from Landmark University in 2015 and went ahead to do her MBA in Finance at Dublin Business School.
Keeping her musical interests alive, Itse has won a couple of awards and competitions. She started her music career as a rapper, but over the years, she has evolved. Now, she is an all-around artist who can fit into several musical genres.
