Isaac Dunbar is a talented 15-year-old singer-songwriter and producer. Not too long ago, he talked to us about his upcoming EP, overcoming obstacles, and much more.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Isaac Dunbar: I am from Barnstable, Massachusetts, which is on Cape Cod. It is very relaxed here, but the weather is BUSTED from November – May. It’s always cloudy and it makes me sad. High school is annoying, I only have 5 friends but I like my teachers.

When did you start singing and writing songs?
ID: I’ve sung my whole life. I used to be in my district’s school chorus from 4th-8th grade and that’s where I learned a ton regarding my vocal style. I started writing when I was nine. I was so inspired by Lady Gaga and EDM at the time.
When did you start producing music?
ID: I started producing when I was nine. I illegally downloaded FL Studio 10 in my local Barnes & Noble and watched a ton of tutorials.
I used to try and recreate the synths in my favorite songs and I learned synthesis and a little music theory and I developed perfect pitch.
Who are some of your influences in regards to production?
ID: My production influences at the time were Madeon, Porter Robinson, and Zedd. Currently, I’ve been a huge fan of Joel Little and Jack Antonoff’s work.

When did you know that you wanted to pursue a career as a singer?
ID: When I was nine years old. I knew I had something creative in me that I wanted to share with the world, and luckily, I am so blessed with the opportunity to do this and make a living doing what I love.
What were some of the obstacles you had to overcome?
ID: Some obstacles I’ve had to face is regarding my family. They’re very nervous that this won’t work out and that I’ll need a ‘Plan B’ of some sort. I’m slowly overcoming this, but it’s still somewhat relevant in my life.

If you could give one advice to an aspiring singer-songwriter, what would it be?
ID: Do all those weird things you want to do. Experiment, and do not ever be scared to do so. People appreciate things that are different nowadays, so be weird.
Tell us about your upcoming 8-song EP.
ID: This EP has been in the works since I was fourteen years old. I never really had the mindset “I am going to make an EP right now. I’m gonna start from scratch starting now!”
It happened over a period of time. But now, I happened to have made a really cool collection of really cool songs that can come together to make a full body of work.
I have worked so hard on it, and expect to hear a lot of experimentation in the coolest ways.

If you could reveal one unknown thing about you, what would it be?
ID: Before making music, my passion was baking. My specialty was baking French macarons. They’re the hardest pastry to make, period.
I baked every single day and I still low key have the urge to bake. Maybe this summer when I have time away from school I’ll start back up again.
Thanks for a great interview. Is there anything else you would like to say?
ID: Thank YOU! I’m just excited for everyone to hear the EP, and I hope it can touch a lot of people in a positive way.
