Express Office Portico is a rising band from Nottingham, England. Not too long ago, they released an infectious electro-dance single, “He Said She Said,” produced by the acclaimed Joshua Rumble (Bastille, Black Country New Road, Anteros).
Express Office Portico – “He Said She Said”
“He Said She Said” offers another taste of the electrifying blend of melodic pop melodies with biting indie tendencies and washes of analog synth. Growing from its guitar intro, the track quickly introduces its driving drums, plucky bass, and melodic, pop-influenced lead vocals.
Vibrantly likable and catchy, “He Said She Said” is a brilliant example of relatable, accessible, yet interesting and heartfelt songwriting. Growing through its swelling synths and bright guitar tones, the track is pulled forward by the emotive, vibrant lead vocals that are joined by a brilliantly placed harmony into the track’s infectious chorus. Showcasing a restrained, tasteful, and perfectly minimal arrangement, the single retains a spacious brightness.
Capturing a breezy indie-pop tone comparable to the likes of Alvvays, Express Office Portico’s sound manages to balance its pop melodies with inventive indie instrumentation to great effect. Growing into its latter half, the track reaches a vibrant Tame Impala meets Men I Trust-esque half-time section before ending with a euphoric final chorus.

“‘He Said She Said’ is a dramatic retelling of an argument between two lovers. Written in the perspective of the instigator, it depicts the needed self-reflection that healthy arguments should often contain with a message that the true resolution to overcoming conflict is being able to admit your flaws and understand the other person’s perspective to meet a true middle ground.” – Express Office Portico explained
“He Said She Said” will be featured on Express Office’s hotly anticipated debut EP, “Incommunicado,” available on March 29th, 2024. Displaying the inventive, introspective themes covered across the upcoming project, the band has garnered significant attention with their unique blend of pop and ‘70s rock influences, earning praise from critics and fans alike.

With every single released to date having received airplay on BBC Introducing and four of their singles being playlisted on BBC Radio Nottingham shortly after their debut, Express Office Portico has seen a wave of tastemaker coverage. Also making waves on the live circuit, the band has packed out local venues such as The Bodega, Rescue Rooms, and Rock City BETA for the Beat the Streets festival in Nottingham as well as opening for several rising artists including Swim School, BIS, and The Deep Blue.
Already established as one to watch, Express Office Portico is utilizing the hype surrounding the band with the release of their debut EP, “Incommunicado,” written and recorded partly in the Old Chaplin Road side of Battery studios in Willesden, London, and in drummer Olly Walton’s house in Bottesford, Nottinghamshire. The project features performances from new member Sam, who replaced the old guitarist who also features on the EP.
Express Office Portico – “Incommunicado” EP
“The phrase ‘Incommunicado’ was taken from a poem written by Sylvia Plath. In simple terms, it means the inability or lack of wanting to communicate with others. Sylvia’s writings often are deeply confessional and painfully personal, revealing a sense of honesty and vulnerability that is not often found in a modern world of social media and keeping up appearances. ‘Incommunicado’ similarly displays not only an exposing set of lyrics written about topics such as childhood trauma, substance abuse, and unstable relationships but also includes the overarching theme of an inability to communicate with and fully understand the world we live in due to this. While the EP holds this rather solemn theme of seclusion throughout, the lyrics inside each track attempt to challenge this sense of hopelessness to the world, and bittersweetly chip away at the idea that self-isolation and preservation is the solution to overcoming deeply held pain.” – Express Office Portico explained
