Dondi is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter from the beautiful island of Kaua’i, Hawaii. Not too long ago, she released a lovely music video for her “Detox” single, produced by Nā Hōkū Hanohano and songwriter Michael Ruff.
Dondi – “Detox” single
‘Detox’ centers around the idea of spending time alone to “detox” from unhealthy relationships and habits. Also, to be mentally renewed. Furthermore, “Detox” contains a personal narrative, pleasing vocals, and tuneful melodies. Also, the introspective tune possesses acoustic instrumentation decorated with a warm indie-pop aroma.

“I used to be that one girl that you went to middle school with. Who wore big fluffy scarves (mind you, I grew up in the tropics). Plaid school-girl skirts over my rolled-up jeans (like the girl from Juno ‘cause I thought she had so much spunk). And lime green slippers (I don’t even have an explanation for this one) because I literally could not care less what people thought about it. I thought it was cool and thus, in fact, it was the coolest. I didn’t follow the status quo, I enjoyed living on the fringes of pop culture. And the idea of conforming to society in any way annoyed me. I was my own creature, and if you loved me for it then you really loved me. And if not, I probably didn’t like you either (ha-ha jk, mostly).” – Dondi
“Nobody knows what I did today, but that’s okay.”
“Although I never look back and miss the plaid skirts over the jeans, sometimes I miss the girl who wore them. She was so unbothered by it all. Somewhere along the way, as is the case for most of us I believe, the weight of the world chipped away that care-free confidence. And I succumbed to the shallow (but very real) worries of the world. Needing to be liked. And needing to fit in. Needing to seem like I actually know what I’m doing with my life (I don’t btw) like I have big plans or something. Just needing to prove myself. Needing to feel pretty. Needing to keep your attention. And needing to earn love. But, ‘All is vanity and grasping for the wind’, like a wise man once said (10 points to Gryffindor if you know which wise man).” – Dondi
“Detox”
“Because you can’t actually earn love, can you? And you can’t make anyone like you. They either will or they won’t. And probably half of you reading this also have no idea what you’re doing with your life most of the time. And yet we all feel so alone because we all pretend like we do. I have to constantly remind myself of the truth in a world that’s always trying to make us believe the opposite. So a year ago, I dropped off the grid for about a month or so, overwhelmed by these thoughts. And I picked up my guitar and wrote a song that I’d now like to share with you. It’s called ‘Detox’. It’s really more for me than it is for anyone else. But I hope you like it anyways.” – Dondi
“Detox” serves as a fantastic presentation to what listeners can expect to hear on Dondi’s upcoming EP, entitled, “One For Me”, which is set to be released late 2020.
