“Good Guy” begins with a flirty bass line and a funky guitar, setting the stage for Devon Cole’s exploration of her dating choices. The lyrics, “You only ever wanna watch all the movies I like. You don’t wanna ruffle any feathers. Maybe if you did, I’d like you better,” delve into the intricacy of her way of thinking. Devon’s soulful voice captures the essence of her struggle between wanting the ‘good guy’ and being inexplicably drawn to more unpredictable partners.

Devon doesn’t shy away from admitting her preference for the more daring partner. She acknowledges that while the ‘good guy’ might be the safer choice, it’s not always the most appealing. This internal conflict is something many can relate to, making the song not just catchy but also deeply resonant. Devon’s ability to convey such nuanced emotions is a testament to her songwriting prowess.

Devon explained: “‘Good Guy’ is a song about wanting something that’s bad for you. Objectively, I know that dating emotionally unavailable men never ends well, but there’s something about the chase that I find really intoxicating. If I’m psychoanalyzing myself, I know that it has something to do with my upbringing. I fought for my dad’s attention growing up… so that’s what’s familiar to me – fighting for men’s attention. The second that someone isn’t into me… woof. I’m head over heels for them. I’m not saying that it’s a good thing – obviously, it’s problematic. Clearly, I need to do some work to unpack this situation. But I think it’s very relatable.”

With this new release, Devon continues to showcase her versatility and depth as an artist, solidifying her place in the music world. “Good Guy” is a testament to her ability to blend witty lyrics with captivating melodies, making it a must-listen for anyone navigating the complexities of modern dating. The song follows the success of Devon’s previous single, “I Got You,” a friendship anthem that has significantly boosted her streaming numbers, surpassing 123 million streams.
