“The lyrics are a very real account of me trying to figure out my path in life, realizing that I am the one who needs to break toxic cycles in my family and be in charge of my own healing for myself and future generations. There’s a lot of pain in that newfound awareness as it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and lonely in the process; but the more I’ve invested in myself, the more hopeful I’ve become. The idea that we don’t have to be tied to anyone else’s journey or choices is a very freeing thing and something I am avidly chasing. I imagine there are many people who would resonate with this message, and I hope it inspires them to doubt themselves a little less and love themselves a little more.” – Claire Davis explained
‘Times Have Changed’ came together collaboratively with some of Canada’s best in the soul and R&B game. Toronto production house, Safe Spaceship (Scott McCannell, Chino de Villa, and Ben MacDonald), composed the music and then brought the track to Claire Davis to compose the melody and lyrics with the help of Kyla Charter. La-Nai Gabriel completed the track with a powerful horn arrangement – performed by Northern Soul Horns (Arkells). Staying true to a retro sound, the bed tracks of “Times Have Changed” were laid down to a 1-inch 8-track tape machine, using Davis’s first vocal take in the final mix.
‘Times Have Changed’ follows on the heels of Davis’ sassy breakup single, “Long Gone,” and her 2021 EP, “Thrive.” Furthermore, the song will be featured on her forthcoming debut album, “Get it Right,” slated for release in Spring 2023.

“I wanted to have the flavor of some of my favorite soul records while also being unique compositionally. Using an analog process is all about capturing the vibe of a performance, it’s a practice in giving up the idea of perfection and tapping into the moment when you’re recording.” – Claire Davis explained
A jewel of Canada’s soul scene, Claire Davis is a musical time traveler known for her mighty and expressive vocals. She authentically and effortlessly brought the sounds of ‘60s and ‘70s soul into the present on her debut solo EP, “Thrive.” Recording the EP to tape, Davis stayed true to the golden years of soul music that inspired her most.
Carving out her reputation as a powerhouse frontwoman and background vocalist in the Toronto music scene, Davis joined the seven-piece retro funk ensemble, YUKA, as their lead singer on full-length album releases [From the Ancients (2014) and Dreamscape (2019)] to critical acclaim. Regarded as one of the best live acts coming out of Toronto, YUKA shared the stage with The Dap-Kings, Lee Fields and the Expressions, Treme Brass Band, and The Souljazz Orchestra.
“We blossom the most when we love and take care of ourselves first. It’s the only thing we can truly control.” – Claire Davis stated
Davis established herself as a go-to background vocalist for all things soul. To date, she has performed with legends such as Martha Reeves (of Martha & the Vandellas), Sharon Jones & the Dap Kings, Jully Black, Charlotte Day Wilson, Jessie Reyez, and Daniel Caesar.
Stepping out on her own as a solo artist, Davis teamed up with producer and YUKA bandmate Scott McCannelll to write and record her debut EP, “Thrive.” An EP exploring themes of relationships and heartbreak, the title track centers on our relationship with ourselves — the relationship which all else is built upon. Claire’s upcoming LP, “Get it Right,” is a 10-track album featuring some of Toronto’s top-flight musicians.

“The concept behind the album is about knowing your worth and putting the work in. I think this is a poignant message for many people as we emerge from a tumultuous time. We have had the opportunity to assess what we actually want to return to, what’s truly for our benefit and for the greater good. Much of the lyrical content on the album is inspired by my own personal journey of struggling to break toxic cycles within my family and learning to forge my own path.” – Claire Davis explained
The forthcoming album consists of some of Claire’s most personal writing to date—drawing from the reflective nature of the pandemic, her compositions and lyrics examine themes of self-worth, relationships, and even family dynamics.
