Ax and the Hachetmen – “Sunscreen” Lyric Video
Through kicking hi-hats and slinky guitar riffs, “Sunscreen” gives listeners a taste of the loss of past loves. The high-spirited rockers manage to blend an upbeat rhythm with deeply emotional lyrics, creating a song that resonates on multiple levels.
Frontman Axel Ellis explained further, “‘Sunscreen’ is a post-breakup song about loneliness, isolation, and a longing for what once was. We chose to write the lyrics somewhat through the lens of a ghost, watching their past lover live on and wishing they were alive to reconnect. The metaphor aims to express the desire to relive the past and feel again, describing the death of a past love in a more literal sense. The song describes different pieces of dealing with a break-up, like trying to numb the feeling through shallow love, along with the feeling of being ‘haunted’ by dreams and visions of the person you still love. It’s a lost-feeling moment in time.”
“Sunscreen” is a relatable anthem for anyone who has experienced the pangs of a breakup. The song’s ability to blend a catchy tune with profound emotional depth makes it a standout track in Ax and the Hatchetmen’s discography. As they continue to evolve and produce music, fans eagerly await what this talented band will come up with next.
Ax and the Hachetmen
Formed in 2018, Ax and the Hatchetmen came roaring out of Chicago with feel-great, crowd-pleasing shows, tight-knit musical camaraderie, and a wide range of influences spanning generations and genres. Led by guitarist/singer Axel Ellis, the band also features Sal Defilippis on guitar, Hunter Olshefke on bass, Nick Deputy on drums, Phil Pistone on trumpet, and Quinn Dolan on saxophone. Along with Ellis, the road-tripping sextet originally met in music school, where they were studying jazz. Though each band member has a formal music education, together Ax and the Hatchetmen have a loose, organic, rollicking vibe, channeling everyone from the Strokes to the Specials to the Rolling Stones, the Black Keys, Pink Floyd, ELO, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, Cage The Elephant, and Hippo Campus.
The last few years have been a whirlwind with the release of their first EP, “Bear On The Roof,” in 2020, completing two headlining tours in 2022, and releasing four new singles “Existential Crisis, Pt. 1,” “Beelzebub,” “Grace,” and “Utah” that have since racked up millions of streams the world over. More recently, Ax and the Hachetmen released a live album, headlined a sold-out 30-date 2023 tour, played to thousands at their hometown’s iconic Lollapalooza, and inked a record deal with Arista Records. Ellis is also launching his on-screen career this year with a featured role in the upcoming Amazon episodic series “The Runarounds.” Meanwhile, the Hatchetmen have been in the studio recording a brand-new mix of new tracks.
Since the release of “Where tf Did I Park My Car,” “Flagstaff” and now, “Sunscreen,” the band’s following have only been wanting more. There are no signs of slowing down either as the band has some exciting news to come next month.
