An Inside Look at Annika Catharina’s “Love and Hate” Single

Annika Catharina (@annikacatharinamusic) is a singer-songwriter from Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada. Not too long ago, she released a contemporary Country single, “Love and Hate,” written by Annika along with Parker Graye and the song’s producers The Renaissance (Dan Botch and Garrett Ward).

“Love and Hate” kicks off with an energetic guitar riff that slides into the song’s trademark drum beat to accompany Annika Catharina’s fiery vocal exploration of an overheated, tumultuous, and doomed relationship.

Annika says, “Timing is everything. Sometimes two people are perfect on paper, but they’re together at the wrong time. Before long, they’re trapped in what feels like an endless cycle of passionate love, rising anger, and crushing anguish. After being in such a relationship, I know the highs and lows too well. All these years later, it felt like the right time to revisit and reflect on that experience and craft a song to capture all of those emotions. ‘Love and Hate’ emerged.”

With “Love and Hate,” Annika is poised for her third impactful release of the year while offering a sonic source of understanding for others who are navigating their own stormy relationships. She says, “If someone is experiencing this chaos, I hope they find peace knowing they are not alone. If it’s time to move on, you can and will find a way out.”

To mark the release, Annika landed the cover spot on Amazon Music’s “Poppin’ Country” editorial playlist; along with editorial placements on Apple Music’s “Today’s Country,” “Canada’s Country,” and “New in Country;” and Spotify’s “North Country” and “Country Frontier.”

Though pop and rock were the genres that Annika Catharina first loved, it was the songs of Patsy Cline that drew her to country music. After hearing “Walking After Midnight” and “Crazy,” she wanted to perform country songs any chance she got. Based in the Fraser Valley region of British Columbia, Annika started singing country covers along with other classics, placing in various competitions, such as Variety’s Got Talent, PNE Star Showdown, and Youth Talent Search BC.

In 2017, a bad accident changed Annika’s course, requiring multiple surgeries and reconstructive facial surgery as part of her recovery. While her new circumstances made singing challenging, it hardened her resolve to pursue music. Determined to turn a setback into a turning point of positive transformation and inner strength, Annika steadily grew her musical activities, eventually taking on singing duties with a working band and in an acoustic duo.

As she celebrates her newest single, “Love and Hate,” Annika is excited, inspired, and – more than anything – grateful for being able to record music and share it with the world.
