Anna Aya (@annaayaofficial) is a talented young artist who caught our attention when she released an adorable music video for her debut J-Pop single, “Someone Else,” released via Handcraft Entertainment and globally distributed by Virgin Music. Not too long ago, we caught up with Anna amidst her busy schedule, and this is what she had to say.
Tell us a little bit about who you are.
Anna Aya: Hi, I’m Anna Aya! I’m half Japanese and half Armenian, and I speak, read, and write both languages. I was born in L.A., and I grew up living in both L.A. and Tokyo. I’ve been a model and actress since I was six and just now started my singing career, hoping to introduce J-pop to the world.
What is your new song about?
AA: I’m so happy to be sharing my first single “Someone Else” with the world! It was important for me to put out a song that encourages others to realize their self-worth and to take care of themselves and their heart first…because there is always someone else that will respect them.
Who are some of your musical influences?
AA: My all-time favorite artist has always been Ariana Grande, but Taylor Swift, Hikaru Utada, and XG also inspire me and my music because I love their uniqueness and how they each express themselves through fashion, beauty, and overall style.
How did you get into music?
AA: I got an offer to join this project to introduce J-pop to the world, which started my musical career. However, I’ve been a music lover my whole life, especially as a dancer who dances to different types of music all the time.
What is your proudest moment and most memorable musical moment?
AA: My proudest and most memorable moment was when I officially got signed to a major label, Virgin Music.
What advice would you give to an up-and-coming artist?
AA: I’d say put in as much effort as you can, stay true to yourself and your vision, and trust that the right opportunities will come to you at the right time!
What is the best advice anyone has given you?
AA: The best advice I’ve gotten is to not take anything personally, and to stay positive.
Tell us something about you that the world doesn’t know.
AA: I got accepted to my dream school and was actually planning to go to Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan to learn translating professionally. I’m currently deferring for my first year to focus on my music career, but I hope to go back one day and graduate.

“I’m heavily influenced by my culture and experiences as a mixed person. The Japanese side is more reserved and diligent. Then, I have my loud, extroverted, and outgoing Armenian side. Of course, Los Angeles is super social and that influences me too. I’m a balance of the peaceful, calm, and collected self and louder self.” – Anna Aya explained
